Komodo Edit is the free version of the award-winning product from ActiveState, Komodo IDE.
I tried Komodo IDE some years ago under Linux, in 2006 to be more accurate. I liked it, it was very complete, with very good features. It was a very good alternative to develop open source web projects. I remember that I left it out because my PC was a little limited in resources to run the program. Besides...commercial software under Linux? Hmmm, a little weird thing.
Years after, I heard that ActiveState released a freeware version of Komodo IDE, under the name 'Komodo Edit'. So I decided to try it out.
Of course, there are some missing functionalities, like the debugger, the interactive shell, and the DOM viewer. But it is still a great IDE for PHP, Python, Ruby, Javascript and CSS development.
The user interface is not the big thing, but it's clean and well organized. The program is highly configurable and extensible.
One of the things I liked more is the availability in Windows, Linux and Mac. And there seems to be a big community supporting it. There is even a project to create an open source version: Open Komodo. It's very promising...don't forget to check it out too!
